The CS2 rank system, clarified
CS2 has two different systems for ranking players: Competitive ranks and CS Rating in Premier mode. In Competitive, players now hold a rank (from Silver I to The Global Elite) for every map.
In Premier, players are handed a number between 1500 and 35,000 once they win 10 qualifying matches; that is their CS Rating. The value changes after every match, and the number is always on show. In Premier, players cannot choose which maps they want to play on; the map is decided at the pick and ban stage.
In Counter-Strike 2, Valve puts a lot of weight on Premier as the main way to play competitively. The mode is not new to the franchise, but in CS2 it has a rank system of its own, built on numbers rather than the familiar titles, which means CS2 ranks look fairly unusual.
The CS2 rating system
The first thing you need to know is that CS2 has two kinds of rank. There is your rank in Competitive, and there is your so-called CS Rating in Premier. In Competitive (where you can choose the maps you want to play) you still get the old ranks, the same as in CS:GO, while in Premier your rank is replaced by a number.
CS2 Competitive ranks
CS2 Competitive lets you choose the maps you want to queue for. That means that, unlike Premier (which has a pick and ban stage and can drop you onto any map in the competitive pool), you can simply not play the maps you do not know or are not good at. In CS2, every map has its own rank. So players who only queue Mirage, for example, can be Global Elite on Mirage and Silver IV on Nuke. The change was made so that players who have one-tricked a particular map do not have to face high-rated opponents on maps they almost never play. On top of that, the new system is a great way for players to get to know new maps. If you are Global Elite, say, took a short break from the game and came back once a few new maps had been added, you will not have to play against top-tier players while you are still learning the angles and the callouts of those new maps. That should make matches in Competitive feel more competitive.
